According to the research by Ergin Dinc, the copper wire used in telephone transmission can be used for internet broadband services. As we know, fiber-optic cables are used for data transmissions in internet broadband services. Researchers claim that copper telephone wire already in use can achieve data rates three times higher than the currently seen. The copper wire gigabit broadband can be used over short distances.
In the UK, at the University of Cambridge, Ergin Dinc and his colleagues said that twisted pair of copper wire used for telephone lines now can be repurposed for broadband internet. Copper wire can support frequencies five times higher than currently used; it can improve data transmission rates. Ergin Dinc and his colleagues also said that houses nearby fiber optic cables achieve higher speeds than they currently enjoy. Many homes in the UK rely on repurposed copper telephone lines for internet access.
